IFLC Mourns the Passing of Longtime Community Volunteer Sheryl “Sheri” Terebelo Schiff

IFLC mourns the passing of longtime community volunteer and interfaith relations leader Sheryl “Sheri” Terebelo Schiff, 72, of Birmingham who passed away January 5. Schiff was best known for her tireless work as director of Bookstock for the last 19 years. Bookstock, is Michigan’s largest used book and media sale, where sales of books are donated to fund literacy projects throughout the Metro Detroit area.

At IFLC, Schiff served on the Religious Diversity Journey committee. She also held leadership roles at JCRC/AJC in planning special events such as the annual Mitzvah Day, where members of the Jewish community volunteer at shelters and soup kitchens each Christmas Day.

Her passion and energy that united people across faiths has left a legacy in Metro Detroit and she will be missed by IFLC’s leadership.

“I will always remember Sherri as a champion of multiple causes,” said IFLC president Raman Singh. “She put her heart, mind, and talent into making her community a better place. She truly lived out her beliefs and passions and will be terribly missed.”

Just this last year, she was honored as Volunteer of the Michigan Jewish Historical Society and in the past received honors at the Diversity Champion Honor Roll Breakfast at the community house in Birmingham.

“Sheri was often like a force of nature and whatever she felt; she felt it strongly,” said IFLC Vice Chairman Robert Bruttell. “She was adamant about teaching children and about reading books.. It is now our responsibility to make sure we channel her energy.”
