'Food Stamped' entertains, educates, and issues challenge to fight poverty with faith

Have you ever wondered what it's like to buy groceries with food stamps, or how a person can eat on less than $31.50 per week?

The Jewish Community Relations Council is offering a free public screening of the poignant and entertaining documentary film "Food Stamped" on Tuesday, October 25 at 7 p.m.   This film follows a couple as they attempt to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet on a food-stamp budget. Through their adventures, they consult with members of Congress, food justice organizations, nutrition experts and people living on food stamps to take a deep look at America’s broken food system.

The screening is part of Fighting Poverty with Faith, a national, interfaith movement working to overcome poverty in the United States.  The 2011 theme is "Working Together to End Hunger."

After the film, people will be encouraged to register for the Food Stamp Challenge to get a small taste of what it's like to live for a week on $31.50, the average amount one person receives weekly in food stamps, for the week of October 27-November 3.

The event, hosted by the Jewish Community Relations Council and Gleaners Community Food Bank, will be held at Gleaners Headquarters, 2131 Beaufait in Detroit.
